Rob moved to the living room and plopped down on a familiar couch, âFinally, something we didnât replace.â
He dug into his robe and pulled out his phone, thumbed through the contacts. His thumb hovered over the name Jed for too long, he was hesitant to press it. Nerves were getting the better of him.
Something moved out of the corner of his eye, past the room down the hallway.
Rob peered his head as far as he could, he couldnât see anybody.
He peeled the curtains in the living room back, he watched as Lanaiâs car fully emerged from their driveway and pulled down the street.
Still, something had caught his attention. Rob stood up and looked further down the hall, following it to a shut door.
Between the floor and the bottom of the door, a light flicked on. Rob took a step back, the suddenness of it shocked him. The doorknob made a popping sound as it jumped open an inch, exposing the light from inside, casting a beam down the otherwise dim hallway.
CREEAK.
The door crawled open; Rob couldnât move. His brain was telling him something was wrong, but his body couldnât do anything but watch.
After a couple inches, the door stopped. The light inside flickered, off and on. The light flickered faster and faster until it was as rapid as a strobe light.
Another sudden noise made Rob step back, a heavy BANG.
Slowly, on the floor, something appeared from the edge of the doorway. Rob squinted as he tried to see what it was. It was dark and thick, crawling out like a living creature.
Blood.
Within seconds the blood oozed out, pushing the door further open revealing the bathroom with the strobing lights.
The walls were thick with blood, it streamed down the walls from the roof. The sink was on, blood poured out the faucet like a sadistic waterfall. It overflowed the bowl and splashed to the ground.
Blood made no noise as it poured to the ground, Rob noticed a slight hum that began to get louder and louder until it was all he could hear.
The blood made its way to his slippers, he noticed too late, the thick blood clung to his slippers. He stepped back and a fresh bloody print lifted from his slipper.
The humming got louder, he grabbed both his ears to block the noise out.
His hand buzzed; he pulled the phone in front of his eyes to see Lanai was calling him.
He pulled the phone away. Everything was back to normal. The floor was clean, his slippers were dry, the bathroom door was closed.
Rob moved to the bathroom, opening it up as he answered the call.
The bathroom was empty, cleaned to a degree that only Lanai could have done it.
âHello?â He mumbled.
âHey, just calling to remind you that if you do talk to Jed, please ask him if he was bringing his girlfriend to dinner this weekend when he comes to town?â
âUm, of course,â he said as he pulled the door closed. âYeah, no problem.â
